The five permanent members of the UN Security Council, the United States, Britain, France, China, and Russia plus Germany, which make up the 5+1 group, and representatives from Iraq, Egypt, Jordan, and the six members of the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Bahrain, met at the UN on December 16 to discuss Iran’s nuclear program and regional security issues.
Al Khalifa who had personally attended the meeting reiterated amicable ties between Iran and the PGCC.
Elsewhere in his talks, he said that President Mahmoud Ahmadienejad’s proposals to the Doha meeting are currently being studied by the PGCC.
On December 3, 2007, President Ahmadinejad attended the 28th PGCC summit in Doha in which he submitted 12 proposals meant to “reinforce brotherly ties” and “promote cooperation” among Persian Gulf littoral states and Iran.
He also welcomed a suggestion by Iran to hold a special meeting of the OIC foreign ministers to discuss the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.
Mottaki, for his part, pointed to Iran’s friendly relations with Bahrain and other PGCC members, saying Iran’s cooperation with the PGCC has increased dramatically over the past four years.
Mottaki said Iran and the PGCC are making efforts to strengthen their cooperation and they would never let any country affect their good relationship.
“We and the neighboring countries do not allow others to disturb the good and growing bilateral and multilateral cooperation,” Mottaki remarked.
He also said expanded relations between Iran and the PGCC can help reduce the effects of the global economic meltdown.
Mottaki said talks over exporting Iran’s gas to Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Oman have made substantial progress over the past months.
